Harlem Globetrotter Alumni to compete against community in Star-Studded Charity Basketball Game
Proceeds help to send Marshall County HS Girls Basketball team to Hawaiian Tournament
BENTON, KY. - Mark your calendars for Saturday, October 13, and get your tickets now for an exciting, family oriented basketball extravaganza. Wayne “Above and Beyond” Clark, phenomenal 10 Time Nike Slam Dunk Champion and current Guinness World Record Holder will bring his teammates to perform at the Reed Conder gymnasium that day; and you won’t want to miss it. The internationally famous team members are lending their time and talent to assist the Marshall County HS girl’s basketball team in raising funds for their participation in the St. Francis Merv Lopes Hoops Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii, December 16-23, 2012.
“It will be an honor to help these hard working young students to achieve their goals. We are looking forward to this opportunity because it allows us to give back to those who have always enjoyed and continue to support the Harlem Globetrotters,” says Clark.
Clark, a graduate of Georgia Perimeter, will be joined by 6 foot 10 “Big Ticket” Sanders from the University of Louisville and “Showtime” Gaffney, a graduate of Tennessee Wesleyan. Gaffney is rated as one of the all time pioneer Globetrotters, following in the footsteps of the legendary Meadowlark Lemon. The team will be rounded out with explosive ball handling star, “Sweet Pea” Shine from the University of Memphis and feature another Harlem Globetrotter great, “Hollywood” Brown of Savannah State University, who eventually went on to replace the legendary Curly Neal upon Neal’s retirement.
“We wanted to reward the girls for all the hard work and dedication to this program the last two seasons. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience, so this trip will hopefully be something they can remember the rest of their lives,” says Coach Joseph Simmons. Marshall County will be the only team from the state of Kentucky participating in this event. Other teams participating include: two teams from Canada, one from California, and four from the islands of Hawaii. Coming off the programs 20th Regional Championship last season was exciting; however the coaching staff realizes the tremendous challenge of continuing that success grows increasingly difficult in a highly competitive 1st Region.
This charity basketball game is a way for residents to assist these well deserving students while treating themselves and their families to an exciting and rare opportunity. It is particularly unique and pertinent to the community because the opposing team is comprised of respected persons and renowned Marshall County athletes. These leaders and high profile personalities will risk their pride and egos all in the name of fun and for a very good cause.
This will be a very festive and star studded event. Pre-game festivities include Shot Contests, Auctions, Concessions, Basketballs for Sale, a visit from the Chick- Fil-A Cow, a Post Game Autograph Session and much more!
“Showtime” Gaffney summed up the evening by saying, “We are bringing our A game with some of the best slam dunking, ball handling and trick dribbling in the world. We’ll have a good time, make the audience laugh and give them a family-fun performance that they will never forget," concluded Gaffney.
Game time is 6:00 p.m.; doors open at 5:00 p.m. Seating is limited and tickets are on sale at $10 for general admission—children 3 and under are admitted for free. Contact Joseph Simmons at 270-527-1453 to purchase tickets or for more information.
