Docs Dash 5K to honor Dr. Ford, benefits hospital foundation

BENTON, Ky. – Peel & Holland and Marshall County Hospital are excited to announce a 5K they are hosting in Calvert City on October 13. The run/walk came together earlier this year when Kathy Radomski, Peel & Holland’s wellness coordinator, approached Marica White, public relations and foundation director for Marshall County Hospital, about organizing a community wellness effort. Plans started coming together and almost immediately the thought was entertained to honor Dr. H.W. Ford with the race.

He has been on MCH’s medical staff for years, and is a well-known influencer of many runners in the region. The decision to honor Dr. Ford was easy. "Doc", as he’s referred to, is known for wearing socks on his hands while running in the cooler weather, hence the events logo.

Dr. Ford has been a physician for 50 years and a runner for 30. “Doc”, as his friends call him, has an impressive running history, with 10 marathons (26.2 miles), numerous half-marathons and “too many to count” 5K races under his belt. White has been friends with Doc for many years and a running friend for the last 11.

“When I first started running, I told myself that if someone like Dr. Ford, who is nearly 30 years older than I am, can run, so can I,” White said. “He has been my inspiration to keep running all these years.”

A group Dr. Ford has been a part of for nearly 20 years meets on the 641 bypass in Benton on Saturday mornings and runs at least six miles. “I have never met a runner I didn’t like,” Dr. Ford said. “It’s such a pleasure to associate with people with that type disposition.

The event has been appropriately named Doc’s Dash, and will be held at 8 a.m. on Saturday, October 13. The race will begin and end at North Marshall Middle School and benefits the Marshall County Hospital Foundation. For more information, contact Kathy Radomski at 527-8621 or, or Marica White at 527-4856 or Registration and volunteer forms can also be found under the news section at
