Benton Main Street reaches art center fundraising goal

(Filed June 13, 2013) Benton- The Benton Main Street Program announced today that it has met the fundraising goal of $25,000 to benefit the efforts of the Marshall County Arts Commission to complete the construction and equipping of the new Children’s Art Center in downtown Benton.

Mac McDonald, Chairman of the Main Street Economic Development Committee announced the “We Are Marshall County… and We Cover Our Kids” community arts project in April. Today he disclosed that the goal has been met and exceeded “We want to invite everyone to come to the square in downtown Benton this Saturday, June 15 at 6:00pm to witness the Grand Reveal of our project and attend the free Bluegrass Concert at 7:00pm sponsored by the City of Benton.”

Main Street has produced the public art project which will place portraits of Marshall Countians throughout public places in Marshall County over the next six weeks, beginning in Benton and then moving as a public exhibit to Calvert City, Draffenville, and Hardin. Plans are to display the exhibit in each city for two weeks. Each facial portrait will be 2 x 3 feet so as to be easily seen from the roadway and sidewalks.

Patty Coakley, Chair of the Marshall County Arts Commission remarked: “We are so pleased that Benton Main Street has sponsored this successful and fun public art project that we call the Faces of Marshall County. We can’t wait to see our fellow citizens come out to see this exhibit which demonstrates Marshall County pride in such a unique way.”

In what most believe to be a “first” in Kentucky, the project was fashioned as a “crowd-funding platform:” whereby people participated in the campaign via the internet.

“On behalf of the Benton Main Street Organization we are pleased to promote this project as we are a non-profit organization dedicated to the vitality of our community” remarked Josh Hendrickson Chair of the Benton Main Street Program.
