Back by Popular Demand! Calvert City Follies community meetings

(Filed September 2, 2010) Meetings will be held Tuesday, September 7, and Thursday, September 9, at 7 p.m. to inform interested Calvert City residents about plans for a November, 2010, production of the Calvert City Follies. Anyone interested in participating as part of the cast or willing to help in a backstage capacity is asked to meet on either Tuesday or Thursday night at 7 p.m. at the Calvert Elementary Library.

We hope to see many of the members of the cast of the 2008 Follies as well as others from our community who would like to be a part of this year's production.

Britthaven Fundraiser-Sept. 3

Britthaven’s Alzheimer’s Fundraiser will be held at the Benton Drive-In located at 1505 Main Street in Benton, September 3. 10% of Sales goes to the Alzheimer’s Memory Walk to be held at the Waterfront in Paducah on October 2.

 

MCCH to offer 11-week Grief Recovery® Outreach program

 

Murray-Calloway County Hospital is offering an 11-week Grief Recovery® Outreach Program beginning Tuesday, September 7 from 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm. The class will be held weekly in MCCH Educational Services Building located on 8th Street across from the East Entrance of Murray Hospital.

 

The Grief Recovery® Outreach Program provides appropriate action choices to help people move beyond the pain caused by loss. The 11-week program creates a safe environment in which to look at old beliefs about dealing with loss; to look at what losses have affected your life; and to take new actions, which lead to completion of the pain attached to one of those losses.

 

The Program is led by Kerry Lambert, MCCH Chaplain, who has been trained and certified by The Grief Recovery Institute®. The fee for attending the program is $15. For the maximum benefit to all participants, weekly commitment to attending is essential.If you have experienced one or more losses, and you wish to move beyond the pain, this program offers you the opportunity of healing and recovery. Humane Society of Marshall County prepares for Yard Sale Fundraiser

 

Fall Yard Sale preparations are underway at The Humane Society of Marshall County. The Society will start accepting donated items for the sale on Thursday, September 2, during its normal business hours on Monday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. All items, including clothing will be accepted except TVs, computers, and other electronic equipment.

The yard sale will be on Saturday, October 9, 2010. Yard sales are the largest fundraiser event for the Society, a nonprofit organization that is totally self-supported. All funds raised goes towards operating the facility in taking care of unwanted dogs and cats.

KWW hosts 35th Annual Arts &    Crafts Festival at Grand Rivers

Regional tourism organization, Kentucky’s Western Waterland, will hold its 35th Annual Arts & Crafts Festival in Grand Rivers, KY on Saturday, September 4, through Monday, September 6.

The festival is an annual fund-raiser for KWW, a membership organization that promotes regional tourism. The popular event features approximately 100 craft booths and artisans from seven states, according to Marinel Larkin, KWW Executive Director.

The event features handcrafted items, with a few actually demonstrating their crafts. Some examples of items being sold are floral arrangements, baskets, outdoor lawn furniture, paintings, honey, soaps, lotions, jewelry, woodwork, holiday decorations, pottery, candles, gourds, stained glass, bird houses, rocking chairs, rocking horses, weather vanes, etc. We also have multiple food vendors offering a wide selection of great food.

The festival takes place at the Little Lake Park in Grand Rivers, near I-24, Exit 31. Hours are 9:00 a.m. to dusk on Saturday, 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, and 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. on Monday. The cost is $1 per walk-in or $3 per car.

Marshall County Family Week       

Marshall County Family Week for 2010 will be September 5-11. The mission of Family Week is to encourage families to spend time together through various activities, sponsored through community organizations throughout Marshall County.

Here are just a few ways to spend time with your family this week:

Sunday-Sept. 5: Attend church as a family, then attend a picnic and a concert by Classic Waxx (www.classicwaxx.com) in Mike Miller Park, from 1:30-3:30 p.m. Bring your blankets, chairs and picnic snacks for a day in the park.

 

Monday-Sept. 6: Spend Labor Day as a family and have an outdoor cookout!

Thursday, Sept. 9: Benton Library Night! Take your family to see Scott Shupe's World of Reptile Show, 4:30-6:00 p.m. Refreshments and door prizes will be provided.

 

Friday, Sept. 10: Fishing with Families Night! Be at Clarks River Wildlife Refuge Pond from 5:00-7:00 p.m. (across from WCBL in Benton). Marshall County Sheriff's Department Drug Disposal Program will be held in the main pavilion from 12-2. Bring all of your unused, outdated prescriptions or over the counter drugs to the park to be properly disposed of.

Public invited to fundraiser banquet for abused and neglected children

At CASA of Calloway and Marshall Counties, Inc., it’s all about advocating for abused and neglected children, one child at a time…

 

Our annual fundraising banquet will bring awareness about our organization. This fundraiser will enable us to continue our program’s mission to serve as an advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children in Calloway and Marshall Counties.

 

The event will be held September 7, at Murray State University Curris Center with a Silent Auction beginning at 6:00 p.m. and dinner will be served at 7:00 p.m. We are excited and honored to have as our guest speaker Justice Bill Cunningham.

Everyone in the community is invited to attend and individual ticket sales are available at the cost of $25.00 dollars a ticket. We are asking for company/corporate support by sponsoring a table at the cost of $250.00 dollars, which includes 10 tickets as well as program recognition.

Adult Education FastTrack starts soon

 

Marshall County Adult Education is offering a FREE FastTrack GED class starting on September 13. FastTrack GED is a fast-paced, 4 week crash course on preparing for the GED test. Western Baptist offers free     prostate seminar/screening

As part of the NFL campaign, “Know Your Stats: Prostate Defense Begins at 40,” Western Baptist offers a free breakfast seminar for men on prostate health and a demonstration of the da Vinci robot from 7 to 8 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 16, in the Baptist Heart Center auditorium.

Scott Lathram Memorial &          Trooper Island Golf Tournament

The Kentucky State Police Post 1 will host the 2010 Scott Lathram Memorial and Trooper Island Golf Tournament on September 16 at Lake Barkley State Resort Park in Cadiz. $60 per person/4 Person Scramble. Lunch will be provided. Participants may pay at sign up before tee time, however, all registration forms must be received by Post 1 no later than September 8. Extension Office Free learning classes

Marshall County Extension will have a learning session on September 28 at 1:30 p.m. at the Extension Office, “Environmental Pollutants and Nutrition-Nuts & Seeds”. There is no charge for the learning sessions and everyone is welcome to attend. The Extension Office is located at 1933 Mayfield Hwy. in Benton. Next session will be on October 21 at 10:00 a.m., “Energy Use in the Home”.

September Support Groups at MCCH

Murray-Calloway County Hospital will be offering several support group meetings during the month of September, which are offered to everyone in our community. 

 

The Breast Feeding Support Group, Mother to Mother, will meet on Thursdays, September 2, 9, 16, 23, and 30 at 10:30 a.m. at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, at 100 South 15th Street in Murray. Toddlers and pre-schooled age children are welcome. Info-call Tricia at 753-6712 or Valarie at 227-1693.
