Marshals beat Apollo 21-16
(Field 10/02/08) Marshall County’s defense roared to life Friday night and feather flew out of the Owensboro Apollo Eagles. Marshall County sacked Eagle quarterback Hunter Cannon eight times and held the Eagle offense to minus eight yards rushing in the football game. Marshall County’s defense turned in one of their best efforts in the season during the 21-16 win in Owensboro.
Which is not to say the Marshals didn’t have their troubles Apollo’s Courtland Dillard’s 67 yard kick return for a touch down in the second period just as the Marshals had taken their first lead was a telling reminder that Marshall County still has rough spots in the special teams area. Dillard’s score came on the kick following Derek Baier reception and score in the second period. Marshall County’s extra point kick failed and Marshall County was up six to three. Apollo got on the score board first after Trip Carpenter kicked a 31 yard field goal.
Surprisingly enough the score on the kick off after the touch down seemed to energize the Marshals. Marshall County Quarterback Denver Seay’s fiery response to the Apollo score as he ran up and down the team box brought the orange fans to their feet cheering and fired up the Marshall County offense.
Seay and company delivered a short 19 seconds later when he hit Evan Farley with a 48 yards pass in the end zone. Farley reeled in the pass with one arm as he fell onto the sod between two Eagle defenders. Josh Madding capped off the resurging effort by catching a pass from Seay for two points. The score gave the Marshals a 14-9 lead. After their touch down Apollo elected to go for two points after two consecutive penalties against the Marshals on the point after kick got them real close to the goal line. However the Marshall County defense held and after Farley’s score and Madding’s two-point conversion the Marshals went up 14-9.
The fireworks in the second quarter essentially decided the game. Marshall County scored again in the third period When Seay hit Madding with a pass. Hunter Evans kicked the extra point to give the Marshals a 21-9 lead. Although Apollo scored again in the fourth period the Marshall County defense keep the Eagles under control for the remainder of the football game.
With the win the Marshals improve to 3-2 for the season and even their district record at 1-1.
Next Friday night the Marshals will travel back to Owensboro to play Owensboro Senior High School. The trip is the second of three road trips to Owensboro this season. Marshall County High School Athletic Director Jeff Stokes has cautioned that some MCHS football schedules have the Marshals traveling to Madisonville this Friday night he says those schedule are incorrect and the Marshals are traveling to Owensboro Senior High School this Friday night.
